Zoning Matters

The objective of the Planning and Zoning Commission is to be responsible for planning the physical growth and development of the city. In order to fulfill that responsibility, the Commission recommends updating the rules governing subdivision of property, reviews and recommends revising of the zoning laws that regulate the use of property.

The Commission is dedicated to managing the city's development in an efficient and equitable manner, balancing the interests of diverse parties. The Commission seeks to provide clear and timely information to the public and to the Board of Alderman concerning the planning and development activities within the city. The Commission is responsible for updating the Comprehensive Plan for the City, which was updated in 2018.

The Commission is made of nine members, one of whom is the mayor, along with three city officials or employees appointed by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the Board of Aldermen. The other five members shall be resident citizens and qualified voters of the City appointed by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the Board of Aldermen. All members serve without pay.
